About
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a reference model developer by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) that provides a common basis for the coordination of standards development for the purpose of systems interaction1.
Layer architecture
The model describes seven layers, labelled 1 to 7; layer 1 being the lowest:
- Layer 1: Physical layer
- Layer 2: Data link layer
- Layer 3: Network layer
- Layer 4: Transport layer
- Layer 5: Session layer
- Layer 6: Presentation layer
- Layer 7: Application layer
